Some therapists record their sessions with their clients for their own benefit and legal protection…my question is…should a client in order to protect themself legally from possible unethical acts and incompetance of a Mental Health Practitioner. also record the sessions with the therapist?
How many therpists are willing to allow or do allow a client to record their sessions?

As a patient I accidentally recorded some sessions with a therapist.
These recordings were the clincher when I needed to report abuse. It would have been very difficult to make a successful complaint otherwise. That’s been a nightmare in itself. I shudder to think how much worse the damage would have been if I hadn’t been able to prove it with material evidence. Do please bear in mind that by default licensing boards etc do not believe patients and protect their licensees above and beyond what’s reasonable.
Personally, I would not ever meet with any professional or public services staff now without the protection of voice recording – obviously with the consent of the professional. If they refuse consent then you have your next step: terminate the meeting asap.
